VICE PRESIDENT | SAFETY COORDINATOR

I have always been interested in aviation. The elementary school that I attended in the 70’s had a subscription to Model Airplane News in the library, and I was hooked, eventually talking my parents into allowing me to subscribe for my very own copy each month. At a young age, I built several kits, but had limited success. When the Shuttle Helicopter was introduced in the late 80’s, I purchased one from this new store in Herndon called “Hobby Hangar,” and after some success, I went on to earn my Private Pilots license in Helicopters and added Single Engine Land several years later. Today I enjoy all types of radio controlled aircraft and look forward to being at the field on a beautiful day.

I have always had a love for airplanes. I started flying control line at a very young age. I transitioned to radio control airplanes and purchased my first kit, a Gentle Lady glider, at the age of 10 with money I made mowing grass in my neighborhood. I enjoy many aspects of this hobby. Slope soaring ranks as one of my favorite activities but there are not many areas accessible locally today. Gas powered prop planes, especially scale or semi scale, are my main interest today. Over the decades, I have helped start several clubs and I have taught a lot of new pilots to fly. I think meeting and helping people who share my passion for flying is one of my favorite parts of this hobby. I especially enjoy helping young folks who are interested in radio control because they are the future of this wonderful hobby.

I remember my first remote control car named the “Amaze-A-Matics” circa 1973. If you ever had one, I’ll buy you lunch and lets talk. My first plane was a rubber band powered foamie in 1976. I launched it out our back door and it almost cleared our fence and…“BAM!“ Built my first RC Buggy in 1987, the Tamiya Hornet…first pull of the trigger and I screamed “WOW!” as it jumped across the living room and crashed into the wall. In 2000, tried my hand at racing with the Losi XXX-S. Trying to Google that at work was not a good idea. My first RC plane was the Parkzone T-28, purchased in 2009. Its maiden flight I torque rolled it with ailerons reversed…I’m on my 3rd T-28.
